  . . About Us | The Vision . .

To have a new vision of the future, it has always been necessary to have a new vision of the past. Each generation searches only for what it thinks it lacks, and recognizes only what it knows already. And yet, there is so much that we take for granted and therefore become surprised when we recognize them in an unfamiliar context.

To know who we are involves giving up the illusion that humans can be understood simply as examples of their civilization, or nation, or family.

With the explosion of information and technology, better communication has become one of humanity's main priorities, especially as strangers across the world find common interests and emotional connections. It appears as though no human can claim to be intelligent and have lived an enriched life if not benefited from the most significant encounters. A new way of looking is needed in a world which believes that every individual has a right to flower within his or her own limits, given the right environment. Brhaddhvani's™ vision is to create a new global context for the study of the process of change, in particular, within classical music in the South Indian tradition.

A true innovator in his own right, the founder, Dr. Karaikudi Subramanian believes that in the ideal sense, tradition is that which brings a certain connectedness into our lives in reinterpreting the past through what one has experienced in the present. Yet, this has been possible only by exceptional artistes who have strong bonds with particular artistic lineages. In trying to give greater accessibility to this aspect of traditional continuity, 'Brhaddhvani™' as an institution was formed.

A Chennai-based non-profit organization dedicated to research and training in Carnatic music, Brhaddhvani™ was founded in 1989 to revitalize Carnatic music within a global and contemporary context. The organization's integrative and interdisciplinary approaches to music education make traditional Indian art forms accessible to modern culture
