“The finest exponent in the Karaikudi Veena tradition, Ranganayaki Rajagopalan is no more!

My heart aches! I join her family members, friends, disciples and rasikas in expressing my grief. It is an irreparable loss to the world of Music! She was stricken with Parkinson’s disease during her last years. She braved it all with her music! As a performer and a teacher she had earned all accolades. She gave it all from her heart of hearts to the one who shaped her. One would never feel the ‘I’ in her in her personal achievements! I feel that a musical gem, a contented tradition bound wife, an amazing mother to her children and shishyas, a model of guru bhakti and a national treasure is gone forever! But her veena music will remain echoing the vibrations of a musical tradition she was gifted and nurtured by Karaikudi Veenai Sambasiva Iyer, whom she affectionately called Periappa (elder brother to her father). She breathed music, respect for the tradition and love for learning till the end. Her last breath must have echoed deep within her: “Periappa, I am leaving you and the memories of you in my bones. But my soul will, for sure, come back to celebrate your music. I care for nothing else for my rebirth. Now I am joining you!”

Om Shanti…”
